How The State of Michigan calculates Property Tax Increases
 

Many questions have arisen about why property taxes have been so much higher in the last couple of years. The next couple of paragraphs will summarize the information and then include a letter that local officials received from the state detailing how it is calculated.

Summary

  • Several years ago, the people of Michigan voted on a constitutional amendment (known as Proposal A) about property taxes. In part, this proposal said that property taxes could be raised UP TO 5% based on the inflation rate.

  • Prior to 2023, the tax rate was not raised in at least the last few years to the maximum of 5%.

  • In 2023 and 2024, the executive branch of the State of Michigan decided to raise property taxes by a total of 5%.

  • The local government has NO CONTROL OVER THIS. It is a decision made at the state level.
