SODUS TOWNSHIP Sodus Township, Michigan is a small rural community of green pastures and fruit farms, where residents can enjoy a great quality of life. It’s bordered on the west by the St. Joseph River, which was the major source of trade and employment for early settlers. At first, they depended on the abundance of fish for their existence, and then James Larue, the first known entrepreneur in the township, purchased riverfront land in 1835 for the construction of a sawmill. Two years later David Rector took possession of 40 acres of land, and three years after that, Captain Ebenezer Farly purchased 150 acres along the river and began a commercial riverboat venture.
