The next couple of paragraphs will summarize the information and then include a letter that local officials received from the state detailing how it is calculated. Summary Several years ago, the people of Michigan voted on a constitutional amendment (known as Proposal A) about property taxes. In part, this proposal said that property taxes could be raised UP TO 5% based on the inflation rate. Prior to 2023, the tax rate was not raised in at least the last few years to the maximum of 5%. In 2023 and 2024, the executive branch of the State of Michigan decided to raise property taxes by a total of 5%. The local government has NO CONTROL OVER THIS. It is a decision made at the state level.
